Happy Spring. The ground's finally thawing in Tohoku, and kids are taking pride and slide (tackles) in recovered public spaces. As you draw up plans for a Spring weekend, we've got 5 things you may want to to work into your agenda.
In 2011, the people at BAR Architects, an architecture firm located in San Francisco, felt called to help the people of Haiti in rebuilding after the earthquake. To make this desire to help a reality, they partnered closely with Architecture for Humanity and pooled their vacation time in order to send nine architects to Haiti. In this Design Open Mic session, four of the architects on this project share their experience in Haiti, the design for Haiti Partner's Children's Academy, and construction methods leveraging local talent and material.
Location: HQ - San Francisco, CA
Start Date: June 2012
Type: Volunteer
Program Background:
Architecture for Humanity’s HQ is seeking a volunteer to assist with videotaping our weekly Design Open Mic sessions and further editing them for posting.
Design Open Mic is a weekly lunchtime presentation series at Architecture for Humanity's headquarters. Every Wednesday designers, architects, engineers and others share their projects and ideas that tackle a range of humanitarian design challenges. This session is often open to the public.
Design Open Mic takes place every Wednesday from 12 p – 1 p. We do have occasional sessions that are internal and do not need to be taped. We use a small flip camera that is easy to operate but our volunteer will need to be available to sit through the entire session.
Responsibilities:
The American Institute of Architects 2012 Convention is in full swing right now and through the weekend - and Architecture for Humanity is posed to meet, greet and spread the love of architecture.
Booth #363 is hard to miss. The deep blue enclosure designed by Vancouver's Molo Studio curates our Spring campaign - see sketches donated by your favorite architects (details below), pick up a Cameron-signed copy of Design Like You Give a Damn [2], and net an advanced print of our "I Love Architecture" tee shirts.
If you're attending the Convention this weekend, find us "on the floor" - booth details:
We're gearing up for the 3rd annual Design Like You Give a Damn: LIVE! and we hope you can join us. The practitioners' forum of innovative panel discussions and workshops will take place on November 12-13, 2012 in San Francisco. This year's event promises to provide the best programming yet and will qualify AIA members for six learning unit hours.
The two-day event brings together designers, architects, real estate professionals, manufacturers, academics, philanthropists, media and business leaders to address the challenges and lessons learned in humanitarian design. Panel topics address cutting-edge topics relevant to the field and workshops allow participants to gain hands-on knowledge from expert panelists.
