Introduction – part 1

I lay no claim to being an expert in the directory business but do feel I have learned a lot in the last couple of years. I currently run 1 free general, a couple small niche and my latest project is creating a paid directory from scratch. My first free general was such a spam filled mess that I ended up just closing it down but it wasn’t a total loss as it was a great learning experience.

There are so many posts in the forums about PR, PR and more PR, why pay when there are an almost unlimited number of free directories, instant acceptance and did I mention link juice. It turns my stomach.

I have decided to lay it out as I see it beginning with Free Directories, and ending with what is being done here to present a valuable resource for both my clients (those submitting their sites for review) and visitors.

Before continuing it might be a good idea to review this video, paying special attention to the words used in the first part. He is a master at dropping terms which require studying in the context they are used to understand what he is really saying. It took me many reruns to pick up the important information here and how to relate it to the directory world.

It is assumed that DMOZ, Yahoo, BOTW and a few others are the cream and no need to include them here.

It is time the directory industry move forward by providing value to those who apply for listings and a good user experiences for visitors. Sadly, that is not likely to happen until those who chase the (un)holy grail of PR realize that reputation, overall quality and uniqueness of the directory along with link relevance is more important than PR. When these bad neighborhood link farms no longer get submissions they will cease to exist. It will also bring to a practical end the spammer automated submission ripoffs leaving those who offer a good service.

I see many examples of the good, bad and ugly. In most cases I can categorize most in just a few minutes. The purpose here is to neither promote or ‘bad mouth’ any directory. I sometimes do that on the forums but this is not the place at the present time.

A quick question to website owners. Which would you prefer, a link from a PR4 (note that it is quite likely the category pages will have no PR and therefor pass no link juice) directory or a link from a PR 1 directory plus your directory details page (unique content) indexed by the search engines with a good teaser text describing your site. Also would you prefer 100 links from spam filled, bad neighborhood directories or 10 from quality respected directories. Recall what Cutts says in the video mentioned above.

Willie came across their website and having a tenancy to be quite fond of those who think outside the box and not afraid to push the limits he took a closer look.

After bumming around the website which is a pleasing visual experience, drooling over some of the design work and looking over the client list I can say should I be looking for a design/marketing company they would get serious consideration.

Take a look at their Quhl Laughing Samurai Details page which has a direct link to their website.

I have to get it off my chest (seems the um-teenth time) but those &^^%%$** jerks just never learn that they are wasting their time here and at QUHL in general.

ATTENTION SPAMMERS ALL!! Nothing submitted to the directory without payment will ever be listed as with the blog side. I decided to turn off comments because they keep insisting on wasting everyone’s time with their crap.

Go to the link farms where all garbage is accepted with no editorial reviews.

I feel so much better now.

On the positive side a press release is being prepared right now. It should ‘hit the streets’ soon and and with it (fingers crossed) a boost in traffic.

Again, I am committed to this project for the long term and things are progressing about as planned as in slow but sure with quality content which should pay dividends for everyone over time.

All listings at Quhl.com will receive a minimum of 3 links. Your listing title will be the anchor text on both the listing and details pages.

Some things being done here are a bit different from most other directories. That is because I like the challenge of traveling a slightly different road -or- marching in lock step with the rest of the world ain’t no fun. It is my intention that QUHL.com evolve as time passes.

Categories

While the number of categories may seem limited this will change over time as listings are added. We made a decision to do it this way as I feel it is better to have fewer categories with content than have a large list of categories with many being empty. It seems logical that this should benefit both this directory, those listing here and provide a better user experience.
There is a ’suggest new category’ field in the suggest listing form. Please use it wisely as spamming will likely result in submission rejection and as per QUHL terms there are no refunds.

Descriptions

Another option is an ability to provide both a listing and detail page description. As the names imply one is displayed on the listing page and the other on the detail page. The intention is to avoid duplicate content.
If there is no detail description or they are the same then no description will be shown on the details page.
Rules:
1. Listing Description shall be written in the 3rd person, limited to 150 characters and describe the site (no sales hype).
2. Details Page Description allows a method to expand on what services, sales or information your website provides. NO spam, keyword stuffing or comma separated lists. limited to 400 characters.

Important

Please read and understand both the QUHL terms of use and submission guidelines before submitting a resource.

That is a good question which I can’t answer right now. Willie thought it might be a good complement to the QUHL Directory and who am I to argue with such a together guy.

The blog world has never been one of my haunts so who knows what may or may not happen. I will likely be expanding on some of the rules and philosophy related to where I want to take the Directory, the constant spammer fight, general rant about whatever and maybe some site reviews (no! I will not be doing paid reviews).

The one absolute and set in stone is QUHL.com will NEVER be a link farm and as near as can be controlled suitable for all the family.
